Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — On the same day a pro-abortion group announced its top five candidates to support in next year’s elections, a pro-life women’s group announced its Top 12 list. The Susan B. Anthony List is a pro-life women’s groups that supports pro-life women for Congress and targets Emily’s List candidates.
SBA started a "Votes Have Consequences" campaign months ago to highlight some of the most pro-abortion members of Congress in districts where pro-life candidates have good chances to win.
The campaign is headed by Marilyn Musgrave, a former member of Congress from Colorado whose Fort Collins-based district was taken over by pro-abortion Rep. Betsy Markey last November.
Today, SBA announced the twelve pro-abortion members of Congress that will be included in the campaign and where pro-life candidates will be supported to vote them out of office.
Three senators make the list, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado, and Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas.
Eight pro-abortion Democratic members of the House included in the list are Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida, Debbie Halvorson of Illinois, Frank Kratovil of Maryland, Suzanne Kosmas of Florida, Walt Minnick of Idaho, Glenn Nye of Virginia, Tom Perriello of Virginia, Carol Shea-Porter of New Hampshire and Harry Teague of New Mexico.
Interestingly, Markey’s name is not included on the list but, presumably, the pro-life group’s efforts to defeat Bennet in Colorado will allow it to educate the voters in the northern and eastern parts of the state about Markey’s pro-abortion voting record.
"Votes do have consequences, and the current tensions over health care reform should drive that message home," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, Susan B. Anthony List president, about the effort. "The Votes Have Consequences project will shine the light of the truth on legislators who favor government-backed abortion in health care reform."
"We will use every tool in our arsenal to ensure the folks back home know the truth about their legislator’s positions," she added. "If theres one thing many members of Congress learned over the August recess, its the danger of being out of step with your constituents."
The pro-life group has $2 million that it has raised to support pro-life candidates and make voters aware of the records of pro-abortion incumbents.
We’re going to be assertive, strategic and focused in our efforts to elevate the cause of Life at the grassroots level, where it matters, Musgrave added.
It is vital that Americans make their voices heard. Without action, taxpayers will be forced to foot the bill for abortion on-demand in the largest expansion of government-backed abortion since Roe v. Wade. The stakes are high. That is why its so important for pro-life advocates to go on the offensive," she told LifeNews.com.
Some of the money has already been spent on an ad airing on television stations across Nevada against Reid, who has repeatedly voted for abortion despite a pro-life position he held in the 1970s.
The ad points out how Reid is no longer voting pro-life and how he is exposing the pro-life position he still claims to adhere to by backing the pro-abortion health care bills in Congress.
"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he’s pro-life but he voted to use U.S. tax dollars to fund overseas abortions. He also voted to deny health care to deny health care to unborn children of low income women," the ad explains.
"Now Harry Reid is pushing a massive government-run health care system requiring taxpayer funding for abortions. And he won’t allow doctors or nurses the right to object," the SBA ad continues. "Harry Reid says he’s pro-life, so call him and tell him this time to vote that way."
Musgrave emailed LifeNews.com about the new effort to highlight Reid.
"Its time we do something about politicians who say one thing at home and do another in Washington. Senator Harry Reid says he is pro-life, and now is the time for him to prove it," Musgrave says. "Abortion is not health care, and Harry Reid should work hard to ensure any health care reform effort honors and respects innocent human life. Now is not the time for political games."
SBA is seeking just over $25,000 to start airing the Reid advertisement and the organization has matching donors who will help bring the commercial to television outlets across the state.
