Massachusetts Pro-Life Group Asks Cardinal to Withdraw Caritas From CeltiCare

Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) — A Massachusetts pro-life group is calling on Cardinal Sean O’Malley to withdraw Caritas Christi from the CeltiCare partnership. Caritas Christi Health Care has received constant criticism because it will cover abortions under a new state health plan Massachusetts state officials awarded it.
The bid has Caritas joining with Centene Corporation for the Celticare Health Plan of Massachusetts and pro-life advocates say that the web site of the new plan says it will include abortion coverage.
That means the network of six Catholic hospitals affiliated with the Archdiocese of Boston under Caritas Christi will be promoting abortions.
Yesterday, Massachusetts Citizens for Life called on Cardinal Sean O’Malley to take action.
The group expressed again its gratitude for O’Malley’s earlier promise that he would pull out of the CeltiCare arrangement if the agreement did not meet with the approval of the National Catholic Bioethics Center.
Anne Fox, president of the pro-life group, told LifeNews.com, "It is now a week before the plan will go into effect. There has been no approval from the NCBC. There are people who have signed up with CeltiCare who will have to be reassigned to ensure continuity of their medical coverage."
"In light of these facts, we the members of Massachusetts Citizens for Life, urge the Cardinal to pull out of the agreement now, while people’s care can still be assured," she said.
The call comes after the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts released information last week revealing that of the nine members of the Board of Governors of Caritas Christi have been major contributors to political figures who support abortion.
Using information gathered from the Federal Election Commission and the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance, the League disclosed that Caritas Chairman James J. Karam contributed a total of more than $19,000 to pro-abortion figures like President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator John Kerry, Governor Deval Patrick and others.
Caritas board member Joseph H. Feitelberg contributed more than $8,000 to pro-abortion politicians, Caritas board member Neil F. Finnegan donated $19,000, board member John H. Garvey gave $1,750 to John Kerry and board member Ruben J. King-Shaw Jr. gave $10,000 to Obama.
The pro-life group called the contributions further compelling evidence of the indifference and infidelity to Catholic moral teaching which apparently permeates the leadership of Caritas Christi.
No one should be surprised that Caritas Christi is prepared to participate in a state contract requiring abortion coverage, when the leadership of the organization is willing to subsidize and perpetuate the careers of politicians who believe that abortion should be legal, publicly funded and unrestricted," CLM director C. J. Doyle told LifeNews.com.
