Wichita, KS (LifeNews.com) — In a new interview, late-term abortion practitioner LeRoy Carhart compared slain colleague George Tiller to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Carhart also compares pro-life advocates to the Klu Klux Klan and the comments are drawing condemnation from King’s family.

According to the Washington Times, Carhart called the shooting of Tiller, a Kansas-based late-term abortion practitioner, a hate crime.

He called on the federal government to monitor all "anti-choice domestic terrorists," essentially calling into question the majority of Americans and hundreds of peaceful, legal groups that oppose abortion.

"This is the equivalent of Martin Luther King being assassinated," Carhart told the Times. "This is the equivalent of Pearl Harbor, the sinking of the Lusitania and any other major historic event where we’ve tolerated the intolerable for too long."

"I think there is absolutely no difference in putting a cross in front of a person’s home because of what race they belong to than there is putting a cross in front of our homes because we do abortions," Carhart went on to say.

Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and a woman who takes a strong pro-life position following multiple abortions she regrets, took exception to Carhart’s comments.

“For LeRoy Carhart to mention the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who worked through peaceful and non-violent means, in the same breath with that of George Tiller, whose work ended peace and brought violence to babies in the womb, is offensive beyond belief,” she told LifeNews.com. “The analogy is just wrong."

"Carhart also speaks of hate crimes. I would simply ask him, is it not hateful to regard an entire class of people as non-human because they’re unwanted?” she said of how abortion targets unborn children.

Fr. Frank Pavone, the national director of Priests for Life, a Catholic pro-life group, also chimed in with a response to the Nebraska abortion practitioner.

"The message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was that every human being has equal dignity. LeRoy Carhart and every other abortionist violate that message every time they dismember a baby. The comparison is ridiculous," he told LifeNews.com.

Carhart had been considered a potential replacement for Tiller at his abortion business because he had assisted Tiller with late-term abortions. However, the Tiller family has indicated it will close down the abortion center, based in Wichita.
