Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — President Barack Obama’s nomination of pro-abortion Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to become the next Health Secretary is not going over well with pro-life groups. They note Sebelius’ longstanding record against any limits on abortions and say this adds to Obama’s pro-abortion record.

Mathew Staver, a pro-life attorney who heads the Liberty Counsel law firm, tells LifeNews.com, "Sebelius is unfit to serve as the Secretary of Health and Human Services."

"She is so blinded by her extreme commitment to abortion that she cannot be trusted to act in the best interest of those she should protect. Having her serve as the Secretary of Health and Human Services would be like the proverbial fox guarding the hen house," he said.

He pointed out that Sebelius has close ties with late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller, who currently faces multiple criminal charges for potentially illegal late-term abortions. Yet Sebelius honored Tiller and his abortion center staff at a secret event at the governor’s mansion.

"While receiving large contributions from Tiller, in 2003 Sebelius vetoed legislation designed to regulate the health and safety of abortion clinics, including Tiller’s," Staver added.

Charmaine Yoest, the president of Americans United for Life, said other pro-life legislation Sebelius vetoed included bills for parental involvement for a daughter’s abortion, informed consent, medically-supported health and safety standards for abortion clinics, and reasonable limits on late-term abortions.

“Nominating someone with an extremist record on abortion who is also associated with the most notorious abortionist in America to be Secretary of Health and Human Services is offensive," she told LifeNews.com. "This is a politically divisive move. The Senate should reject this polarizing nomination.”

The group called on the Senate to reject Sebelius’ nomination and said it would score any votes related to her confirmation.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, also weighed in on Obama’s pro-abortion selection.

“The nomination of Kathleen Sebelius for Secretary of Health and Human Services is further evidence of something gone terribly wrong for those seeking consensus on the abortion issue, especially the President," she told LifeNews.com.
