High Level Ex-United Nations Official Renews Call for Pro-Abortion Gender Office

New York, NY (LifeNews.com) — A former high level United Nations official is renewing his calls for a pro-abortion gender office that would supposedly advance women’s concerns. Stephen Lewis, a former Canadian UN ambassador and special UN envoy to Africa who addresses AIDS issues, has made the call before.

In July 2006, Lewis made his initial call for a gender office, claiming that the UN had no agency specifically devoted to women even though several deal largely with women’s issues.

The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, a pro-life group that lobbies at the UN, reports in its Friday Fax that Lewis is renewing his call.

Samantha Singson indicates Lewis participated in a forum hosted by the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York this week. There, Lewis criticized the UN’s “deplorable” record on women and the “the hypocrisy within the UN” on gender.

"Lewis promoted a radical overhaul of the United Nations, starting with a the creation of a new, billion dollar gender office," Singson writes.

"One audience member questioned the necessity of a new billion dollar agency," Singson recounted. "There are already several UN bodies which focus on issues affecting women, including the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues (OSAGI) and the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW). "

Lewis said, “Rendering little agencies is not enough. There is not enough staff, not enough resources and no mandate.”

Advocating abortion is nothing new for Lewis.

As Singson writes, "It was during Mr. Lewis’ stint at UNICEF that the Vatican decided to withdraw its annual symbolic donation because of mounting evidence that the agency was promoting abortion. Critics fear that a new agency would not advocate for women but for certain ideologies espoused by those in charge, particularly for a universal right to abortion."

Lewis’ dream of a pro-abortion women’s office fueled by millions of dollars could become a reality, Singson explained.

In 2008, the General Assembly passed a resolution by consensus calling on the UN to initiate planning for such an agency. According to Lewis, the ambassadors of Spain and Namibia have already been engaged to lead the UN “gender architecture” planning process and he expects to see the new agency established as early as the end of this year.

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, twice a United States Delegate to U.N. conferences and a Concerned Women for America spokeswoman, has criticized the idea.

“Lewis’ proposal would dramatically strengthen the already-incredibly-strong radical feminist influence at the U.N., and it would virtually ensure that abortion would become a human right around the world," Crouse said in a statement provided to LifeNews.com.

"Plus, having an agency devoted solely to so-called ‘women’s rights’ would require an increase in already exorbitant funding for the U.N. from member nations – especially the United States – and funnel that extra money into the radical feminist agenda," Crouse explained.

CWA points out that in recent years the phrases “women’s rights are human rights” and "reproductive rights" have become a rallying cry for the United Nations to implement a whole panoply of radical initiatives and policies around the world, including legalizing abortion in every nation possible.

“One of the scariest aspects of Lewis’ plan is to involve international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the planning and operation of the agency," Crouse added.

"Anyone who has knowledge of how the U.N. works recognizes the tremendous influence these radical NGOs have through their domination of U.N. world conferences — especially those for women — and their behind-the-scenes expertise in lobbying for far-left reproductive services (code for abortion) policies," she said.
