Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — While Congress takes a break this week, leading pro-life advocates are urging calls and emails to members of the Senate to ask them to oppose a slate of President Barack Obama’s pro-abortion picks. Obama has put together a long pro-abortion record since taking over the White House.

That record includes a selection of abortion advocates for top spots in the Justice Department.

Nominees like David Ogden, Elena Kagan, Dawn Johnsen, and Thomas Perrelli have drawn strong opposition from pro-life groups.

The Alliance Defense Fund, a pro-life law firm, submitted a legal memorandum to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee urging the panel to reject the nominees.

The memo contends that the nominees’ far-left ideology, established through their legal careers, would gravely jeopardize the proper interpretation and application of the U.S. Constitution.

“We strongly urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to refrain from appointing [these nominees] as they have each demonstrated throughout their careers a flawed understanding of the Constitution,” senior counsel Gary McCaleb told LifeNews.com on Tuesday.

“Their legal philosophies depart from mainstream views, their professional careers reflect a far-left ideology, and their involvement in the DOJ could jeopardize the proper enforcement of federal law and the development of constitutional doctrines," he continued.

The memo addresses Johnsen, the former legal director for top pro-abortion group NARAL, an organization that has publicly condemned the federal law banning partial-birth abortions.

It also takes Perrelli to task for representing Terri Schiavo’s former husband in his efforts to win a court decision allowing him to kill his wife by starving her to death.

Focus on the Family Action, the legislative arm of the pro-family group, is asking pro-life advocates to call and email their elected officials.

"The U.S. Senate is on recess this week, meaning the Judiciary Committee will not vote on the nomination of [the abortion advocates] until late in the month," the group said.

The group notes that David Ogden, Obama’s nominee for deputy attorney general opposes restrictions on abortion, and also pointed out the problems with Kagan, Perrelli and Johnsen.

"Please call your U.S. senators today and ask them to oppose the nominations of David Ogden, Elena Kagan, Thomas Perrelli and Dawn Johnsen. Please make the phone calls, even if you have called once before," the group asked.
