Juneau, AK (LifeNews.com) — Governor Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate, talked yesterday for the first time about a campaign involving her and abortion. To chide her for her pro-life views, abortion advocates launched a campaign to make donations to Planned Parenthood in her name.

In a new interview, she called the political stunt great theater but said it wouldn’t change her heartfelt views on supporting pregnant women and their unborn children.

"I have boxes of thank-you notes from people associated with Planned Parenthood thanking me for the donations," she said during a press conference. "It’s political theater — it’s great theater, I guess, for some."

Palin said that she and Planned Parenthood may "agree on a mission here that we’d like to see fewer and fewer abortions, I, embracing the culture of life, have perhaps a different approach in how I would like to see that goal reached."

The governor, who recently started a political action committee and who some see as a top 2012 presidential prospect, said the campaign wouldn’t change her views.

The donations are "not going to change my views or the views of many other Alaskans who believe every life is precious," Palin added.

Planned Parenthood didn’t officially organize the effort but Clover Simon, Alaska vice president of Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest, told UPI that it generated more than $1 million in donations.

The email that circulated the Internet during the presidential election directed abortion advocates to support the nation’s largest abortion business and donations went to the Planned Parenthood affiliate nearest to the giver’s zip code.

The email suggested sending an acknowledgement to Palin at the John McCain campaign headquarters saying the donation was made on her behalf.

“We may have thought we wanted a woman on a national political ticket, but the joke has really been on us, hasn’t it?” the email asked. “Are you as sick in your stomach as I am at the thought of Sarah Palin as Vice President of the United States?”

The email went on to say, “None of you, however, can be happy with Palin’s selection, especially on her positions on women’s issues.”
