Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Pro-life groups are up in arms about yet another pro-abortion nominee President Barack Obama has put forward for a leadership position in the Justice Department. Obama wants abortion advocate Elena Kagan to serve as Solicitor General, the attorney who represents the government before the Supreme Court.

Because the Solicitor General defends the laws of the United States, Kagan would be in a position to defend laws that either support or oppose abortion.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the pro-life women’s group Susan B. Anthony List, tells LifeNews.com her organization is urging pro-life advocates to contact their senators to oppose Kagan.

She says Kagan has a longstanding pro-abortion position.

"In the past Kagan has been a strong supporter of the pro-abortion agenda," Dannenfelser explains. "She has vigorously opposed the de-funding of taxpayer-funded clinics which promote abortions, despite the fact that a majority of Americans do not want their tax dollars to fund abortion providers."

"Can you imagine someone this out of touch with average Americans enforcing our laws which are designed to help protect women and children?" Dannenfelser asked.

Dannenfelser says her position makes it difficult to trust her to adequately defend pro-life laws before the Supreme Court, and she would likely zealously defend any that promote abortion.

"Our laws, like the partial-birth abortion ban and parental notification, may need an enthusiastic defense before the Supreme Court in the months to come. Elena Kagan will not provide the enthusiastic defense needed to protect these laws," she says.

The pro-life women’s leader also says Kagan doesn’t have enough experience to serve in the position.

"Kagan’s nomination questionnaire expressly states that she has no real experience in the courtroom," Dannenfelser tells LifeNews.com. "In light of her potential role as Solicitor General, this raises serious concerns about the ability of the United States government to defend its positions before the Supreme Court."

Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, also says Kagan is the wrong person for the very powerful post.

"Elena Kagan, although well-credentialed as the dean of Harvard Law School, is the Obama choice for Solicitor General, a post so powerful its occupant is often called the 10th Supreme Court justice," he told LifeNews.com. "Kagan has never argued before the U.S. Supreme Court."

Perkins says pro-life advocates should pay particular attention to the Kagan nomination and oppose it because it could help "determine U.S. legal policy for years to come."

He said Kagan has a "legacy of championing abortion on demand" and should be vigorously opposed.

The Kagan pick is the latest in Obama’s long line of pro-abrotion nominees.
