Portland, OR (LifeNews.com) — Planned Parenthood Columbia-Willamette has faced several different types of protests from the local Oregon residents who are opposed to it building a new abortion center in Portland. Now, pro-life advocates are urging a local plumber to go back on the contract it signed to help build the abortion center.

The new abortion business will serve as the headquarters of the Planned Parenthood affiliate.

It has upset residents because it is located in the heart of the African-American community at Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Beech Street.

Local pro-life advocates have launched boycotts of the contractors and builders involved in the project and now they are targeting Peninsula Plumbing, which has signed on a subcontractor.

Precious Children of Portland has called on the company to withdraw from the project, but Peninsula Plumbing has yet to do so.

The Catholic Sentinel, the newspaper of the Portland diocese, contacted the company and did not receive any response.

Whether the company declines or not, the local protest has had some success as one general contractor pulled out of the job following public pressure and Roggenkamp Erickson & Associates, a Vancouver, Washington engineering firm, decided not to get involved.

Barrs and Genauer Construction of Portland has stepped in to take over most of the building of the facility.

Bill Diss, a local teacher and member of Holy Rosary Parish in Portland, has been one of the local leaders opposing the abortion center and the newspaper indicates he is coming under fire for opposing it and boycotting local companies.

The Sentinel indicates Planned Parenthood has filed a complaint against him with the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission and the agency launched an investigation as a result.

Diss teaches at Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland and Jim Leuenberger, an attorney helping him, told the Catholic paper that he is concerned the commission will not give Diss a “fair shake.”

“The starting point seems to be, Bill is guilty, now prove him innocent,” Leuenberger says.

David Greenburg, CEO of Planned Parenthood-Columbia Willamette, has already confirmed the fears of local pro-life advocates that the new building will increase the number of women going there for abortions.
