Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Leading pro-life advocates say they are not surprised that a new poll LifeNews.com reported on shows that most Americans are opposed to President Barack Obama’s decision to fund groups that promote or perform abortions overseas. They say Americans rightly view it as a pro-abortion move.
In his first week in office, Obama overturned the Mexico City Policy, which the Bush administration put in place to prevent forcing taxpayers to fund groups with foreign abortion agendas.
The policy specifically forbade funding of groups with federal family planning dollars that would not commit to not promoting abortion to overseas women.
The Gallup poll found 58 percent of Americans oppose Obama’s pro-abortion funding decision while just 35 percent support it and 7 percent have no opinion.
Breaking down the new poll further, Gallup asked respondents to state their opinion on seven major actions President Obama has taken since becoming president. Overturning the Mexico City Policy engendered more opposition than any of the other actions and it had the lowest level of support.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue said that while polls show support for Obama overall, Americans do not want him to promote abortion further.
The people have spoken," he told LifeNews.com. "They generally like what Obama is doing so far, but they draw the line on funding abortion. It would behoove him to pay more attention to the American people on this subject and less time listening to the extremists at Planned Parenthood and NARAL."
However, Donohue says Americans can expect more pro-abortion actions from the new president.
"The very day after President Obama approved funding for overseas abortions, he promised to restore U.S. funding of the U.N. Population Fund, a pro-abortion agency. And he has promised to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, the most sweeping and radical abortion-rights legislation ever written," Donohue explained.
Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser also talked with LifeNews.com about the polling results.
This weeks Gallup poll revealed the truth that President Obamas decision to roll back the commonsense Mexico City Policy is out of step with the attitudes of the majority of American taxpayers, she said.
"I strongly urge President Obama to abandon the radical abortion bailout agenda. Americans want him to endorse policies that actually reduce abortion, not promote it at the taxpayers expense," Dannenfelser added.
