Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — A senator who is considered one of just two pro-life Democrats in the Senate has re-introduced legislation meant to help pregnant women and reduce abortions. Sen. Bob Casey, of Pennsylvania, has re-filed the Pregnant Women Support Act, S 270, which would be a pro-life alternative to FOCA.

The bill, a top project of Democrats for Life, contains several provisions to help expectant mothers and their children during their pregnancy and after they give birth.

The bill would help pregnant high school and college students stay in school, promote adoption, and calls for increased health care and nutrition aid, Casey said.

“We must work toward real solutions to the issue of abortion by targeting the underlying factors that often lead women to have abortions," he told LifeNews.com in a statement. "This is precisely what the Pregnant Women Support Act will do."

Casey, who upset pro-life advocates with his endorsement of and active campaigning for pro-abortion presidential candidate Barack Obama, says he thinks the bill helps find common ground on abortion.

"I introduce this bill with the deepest conviction that we can find common ground. I believe that we can transform this debate by focusing upon the issues that unite us, not the issues that divide us," he said.

Casey developed the bill in conjunction with the Democrats for Life 95-10 proposal to reduce the number of abortions by 95% within ten years. Sen. Ben Nelson, the most consistent pro-life Democrat in the Senate, is a co-sponsor and it is the Senate version of a House bill Rep. Lincoln Davis, a Tennessee Democrat, introduced.

The legislation creates a funding and support program for pregnancy centers, establishes a national toll-free number to help pregnant women, helps with the purchasing of ultrasound equipment and provides for free ultrasounds.

It also helps pregnant women obtain better health insurance and medical care, increases funding for breastfeeding support services and pediatric health care, and promotes adoption.
