Portland Oregonian: Tax-Funding of Abortion Helps Obama be More Pro-Woman

Portland, OR (LifeNews.com) — The leading newspaper in Portland has never been a friend of the pro-life movement, but now the Oregonian has gone further. The paper says Barack Obama can put together a pro-woman administration if he starts off by forcing taxpayers to fund the promotion and performance of abortions overseas.
In a Monday editorial entitled, "What a pro-woman presidency looks like" the Oregonian editorial board puts together suggests for the incoming president.
"Barack Obama will be a better president for women’s rights than President Bush," the paper claims.
The first action the newspaper suggests for Obama to ‘make a significant difference to women at home and abroad" is to overturn Bush’s Mexico City Policy.
That’s the federal rule that applies to funding from the State Department that essentially tells groups that if they plan to do abortions in other nations, work to topple their pro-life laws, or tell women how to get abortions they won’t receive taxpayer dollars.
The Oregonian claims the effect of Bush’s pro-life policy, which polls show enjoys the support of most Americans, "has been to shutter clinics in countries like Kenya, where there is a desperate shortage of family planning services."
The newspaper also thinks Obama should restore funding to the United Nations Population Fund. Though the article supposedly contains pro-woman policies for Obama, the UNFPA has been shown to work hand-in-hand with Chinese population control officials.
They have used methods ranging from forced abortions and sterilizations to imprisonment and torture to make women comply with the country’s one-child family planning policy.
Wendy Wright, the president of Concerned Women for America, tells LifeNews.com the newspaper has it wrong and is doing women a huge disservice.
"One of the worst things that could be done to women in developing countries that do not have basic medical care, penicillin, or clean water, is abortion," she explains.
"Even in the U.S., which has good medical care, abortion is harmful, and at times life-threatening. If Obama cared about women, he would not spend our tax dollars to pay for abortions in the U.S. or overseas," she added.
Wright also says the Portland paper is wrong on why clinics closed in Kenya.
"Abortion is illegal in Kenya. The only clinics that closed in Kenya due to President Bush’s policy were those that refused to stop committing or referring women for illegal abortions," she told LifeNews.com.
"Kenyan doctors report that there has not been a decrease in medical care for women," Wright said.
ACTION: Tell the newspaper they are wrong to ask Obama to send tax dollars overseas to promote and perform abortions. Contact the Portland Oregonian at [email protected] or send a 150-word letter to the editor at [email protected] or fax it to (503) 294-4193.
