United Nations Expected to Promote Worldwide Abortion Right With Obama

New York, NY (LifeNews.com) — The United Nations is expected to aggressively promote abortions worldwide with Barack Obama as the new president of the United States. One of the top pro-life lobbyists at the United Nations says he worries the floodgates will come open to perhaps make abortion an international right.
Austin Ruse, the president of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, talks about the concerns in the latest issue of his group’s Friday Fax publication.
Ruse says the UN and abortion advocates there have held off on extensive abortion discussions because they knew the Bush administration would lobby fellow pro-life nations against promoting it.
Those reservations will likely be thrown out the window with a new pro-abortion administration’s UN liaisons representing that policy.
"There was a frenzy of global UN conferences back in the 1990s, including such massive affairs as the Cairo Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Conference on Women, but during the time of the Bush administration the UN has been relatively quiet," Ruse explains.
"The left at the UN counseled quiet during the Bush years for fear of losing ground in the documents that would have come under negotiation," he wrote. "With an Obama administration this fear is removed and one can expect a veritable flood of UN conferences to be announced beginning as early as this year."
Ruse writes that the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights, a pro-abortion law firm, "has already called for President-elect Obama to renew America’s commitment to" abortion.
The CFAM president says he expects the UN, pressured by CRR and other pro-abortion NGOs, to discuss adding the controversial term "reproductive rights," to top UN documents and to define the term as including abortion.
The Bush administration has resisted including abortion in women’s reproductive health care in UN documents and the changing of the definition could easily make abortion an international right.
"It is likely the new president will work almost immediately to correct what his ideological allies like CRR view as multiple mistakes of the Bush administration with regard to international social policy," Ruse writes in the Friday Fax.
Ruse also confirms what other pro-life advocates have said is a concern about an Obama administration on an international front — namely, that the new president will make taxpayers fund abortions abroad.
"Obama has spoken out against the so-called Mexico City Policy, which forbids US money from supporting groups overseas that promote or perform abortions," Ruse says. "No one should be surprised if Obama strikes this down on his first day in office and that US money will begin to flow again to pro-abortion groups overseas."
"Obama has spoken out against US refusal to fund the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), a United Nations (UN) agency that promotes population control, fertility reduction, and abortion all over the world," Ruse added.
Ruse expects Obama to continue funding even though the agency has been found to be involved in the forced-abortion population control policy that forbids Chinese families from having more than one child.
