Montgomery, AL (LifeNews.com) — An Alabama pro-life group endorsed John McCain on Tuesday and said he is the only one of the two major presidential candidates to oppose abortion. The Alabama Citizens For Life Political Action Committee accused Barack Obama and the mainstream media of misleading voters on his position.

"John McCain is the pro-life candidate that can win the presidency. He has stated he will nominate judges who will uphold the constitution as written," ACL representative Cheryl Ciamarra told LifeNews.com.

"Alabamians who want to maintain a respect for life in our nation are urged to vote for McCain–Palin," she added.

Ciamarra says extensive video footage and documentation show Obama supports a Congressional bill, the so-called Freedom of Choice Act, that would invalidate every pro-life law in all 50 states that reduces abortion.

She also said she was upset that Obama tried to hide his opposition to a partial-birth abortion ban during the third presidential debate and pointed to his votes in the Illinois legislature against the ban there.

"He hid behind verbal gymnastics and the code word ‘health exception,’" Ciamarra said, even though "courts have defined ‘health’ to mean ‘any reason’ so once that exception is added to any abortion law it becomes functionally meaningless, stops no abortions and saves no lives."

Ciamarra chided the mainstream media for a lack of coverage of abortion issues and how Obama is out of touch with Americans by also supporting taxpayer funding of abortion and opposing parental involvement or informed consent.

"The media has an objective responsibility to gather facts and get the truth to the public. Every major television network other than religious outlets have given a pass to Obama on this issue," she explained.

"The reason they do not highlight the difference between pro-Life Mc Cain and pro-abortion Obama is because 83% of the American public do not agree with Obama’s extreme position on abortion," the Alabama pro-life advocate added.

Ciamarra cited the recent Birmingham News editorial endorsing McCain as one of the exceptions to the rule of the mainstream media missing the abortion divide and applauded the paper for pointing out the differences on abortion.

Ultimately, Ciamarra says Obama can’t hide behind a "personally opposed" to abortion argument because he said he didn’t want his own daughters "punished" with a baby if they become pregnant.

"Obama, if we take him at his word, would have no problem ending the life of his own grandchild through abortion," she says.

That declared indifference to human life calls into question his prudence and judgement," Ciamarra concluded.
