Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Alaska Governor Sarah Palin talked with pro-life leader Dr. James Dobson in a radio broadcast that aired on Wednesday and called herself a "hardcore pro-lifer." She also said Senator John McCain is very solidly against abortion.

Palin also said the birth of her mentally disabled son Trig allowed her to put her heartfelt pro-life beliefs into practice.

Palin said giving birth to a baby with Down syndrome was "this opportunity for me to really be walking the walk and not just talking the talk. There’s purpose in this also and for a greater good to be met there."

"I was about 13 weeks along when I found out that Trig would be born with Down Syndrome," Palin explained. "To be honest with you, it scared me though and I knew it would be a challenge."

Palin said she prayed during the pregnancy that God would give her the strength to take care of Trig and "just the second he was born, there was this absolute confirmation that that prayer was answered" as she "just fell in love with him."

"I’ve always had near and dear to my hear the mission of protecting the sanctity of human life and I’m a hardcore pro-lifer," she said, adding that she feels "privileged and blessed to have been chosen" to become a mother of a child with special needs.

Palin said she wants America to become a "more welcoming nation for all of our children" and that the pro-life message was very much a part of who she is as a person.

"It’s a part of who I’ve been all these years but now I have a greater opportunity and feel very blessed to be in this position with a greater opportunity to help people understand what we can do to usher in a respect for human life," she said.

Dobson asked her about the pro-life plank in the Republican Party platform that he said is one of the strongest in decades.

"This is a strong platform that respects life," Palin said. "Some people would have assume that you would have gotten away from those strong planks but they’re there, they’re solid and we stand on them."

The governor said there is a "clear contrast" on abortion.

Dobson also asked if Senator McCain really opposes abortion.

"I do from the bottom of my heart," Palin responded. "I am such a strong believer that McCain believes in those strong planks. It is important for Americans to know John McCain is solidly there on those solid planks in our platform that build the right agenda for America."
