Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Yet another national group has launched a new web site falsely claiming Barack Obama supports measures to reduce abortions. After two Catholic groups launched efforts to mask Obama’s pro-abortion views, a third, known as Catholic Democrats, launched a new Catholics for Obama web site today.

The site argues that Catholics should not vote based on the abortion issue alone and contends the kind of economic policies Obama would put in place as president will reduce abortions.

However, if Obama intends to move economic policy in a different direction, it will be a change from what is already working to reduce abortions.

In January, the Alan Guttmacher Institute, named for a former Planned Parenthood president, reported that the number of abortions nationwide have fallen to their lowest point in 30 years. The number of abortions are now at their lowest point since 1976.

Patrick Whelan, president of Catholic Democrats, talked with the Chicago Tribune about the site.

"I feel that every Catholic can vote for Obama in good conscience," he claims. "I think Barack Obama is the first Democratic presidential candidate who has come out and said he plans constructive measures to reduce the number of abortions in the United States."

The only problem is those constructive measures can’t be found.

Obama has yet to propose a single measure to reduce abortions and he is on record as supporting a Congressional bill that would overturn every law to reduce abortions that is on the books in all 50 states.

Instead, Obama told a July 2007 Planned Parenthood meeting that the first bill he would sign as president would be the so-called Freedom of Choice Act that would make unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy a national law.

The measure goes further by overturning laws that have been proven to reduce abortions like parental notification, informed consent, and measures to ban taxpayer-funding of abortions.

In fact, one analyst says Census Bureau figures show abortions could rise as much as 125,000 per year under Obama if he signs the bill into law.

Despite Obama’s record and promises of more abortions for the future, Whelan tells the Tribune he still thinks Obama is changing the face of the abortion debate.

"I honestly believe that Obama has helped this country turn a corner on this issue," he says.
