Louisiana Pro-Life Group Says Mary Landrieu No Moderate on Abortion

Baton Rouge, LA (LifeNews.com) — A leading pro-life group in Louisiana is rebutting some of the discussion that has been going around the state in the last few days claiming Sen. Mary Landrieu is a moderate on abortion. Landrieu faces pro-life candidate John Kennedy in her bid for re-election.
Benjamin Clapper, the director of Louisiana Right to Life tells LifeNews.com that recent articles in both the Times-Picayune and the Lafayette Daily Advertiser have characterized Sen. Mary Landrieu’s record on abortion as "moderate."
Clapper calls that notion into question.
"If you analyze Senator Landrieu’s record, you see that her votes on abortion have been anything but moderate," he said.
Overall, he points to the National Right to Life Committee, which gives Landrieu just a 35 percent pro-life voting record during her time in Washington.
Clapper said Landrieu "has continuously voted to allow tax-dollar funding to organizations" that perform or promote abortions overseas.
He said Landrieu voted in March 2003 to endorse Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that allowed virtually unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy and made it so Louisiana could not make its own abortion laws.
"Landrieu endorsement of Roe v. Wade goes in direct opposition of both Louisiana citizens and Louisiana law, which declares that Louisiana will protect unborn human life if Roe v. Wade is overturned," he said.
In contrast, the Louisiana pro-life leader noted that Kennedy opposes Roe, opposes taxpayer funding of abortion and answered pro-life 100 percent of the time on the group’s candidate survey.
"Senator Landrieu has cast some pro-life votes, and for that, we thank her," Clapper told LifeNews.com. "However, when you support the most sweeping pro-abortion Supreme court decision, vote for tax-dollar funding of abortion, and protect unborn human life only 35% of the time, you cannot be middle of the road."
"The citizens of Louisiana need to know the real record of Senator Landrieu on unborn human life. According to the standards of Louisiana, one of the most pro-life states in the U.S., this record is far from moderate," Clapper concluded.
