Bellevue, NE (LifeNews.com) — An elderly pro-life woman who had been trying to talk women heading to an abortion business out of having their abortion has been violently attacked. Mary Adam, 72, was knocked to the ground and injured outside a Omaha-area abortion center by the mother of a young woman who had changed her mind.

Adam had persuaded a young woman to change her mind about a scheduled abortion. The young lady expressed doubts about the abortion after talking with Mary and indicated she may be willing to have a family adopt her baby.

The next day, as Adam stood outside the abortion center to counsel other women, the mother of the young woman approached with her daughter.

Larry Donlan, the head of the pro-life group Rescue the Heartland, described the incident.

He said the young woman who had planned on having an abortion "return the next morning, this time with [her] mother who was furious that her daughter didn’t have the abortion."

"She hurled threats and curses at the pro-lifers as they got out of the car," he said.

As the mother and daughter approached the abortion facility from the parking lot, Mary told them, "This is the worst thing you will do in your whole life. Your baby’s heart is beating right now."

"Upon hearing this the mother, went ballistic. Cursing and screaming, she rushed Mary, shoving her and knocking her down into the street," Donlan said. "Mary fell backwards hitting her head on the concrete. The woman then went inside the [abortion business] leaving Mary lying in the street."

Fellow pro-life advocates who witnessed the scene pulled Mary to a safe place and called 911 for help. Both a rescue squad and police arrived at the scene and Mary was taken to the hospital.

Officials questioned the mother and she was ticketed with a class-three felony assault, but was not arrested. Donlan said he is unhappy about that and is urging pro-life advocates to contact local authorities and ask that the assault be properly prosecuted.

"There can be no question that if any of us had done something similar, we would surely have been arrested and jail," he said.

Mary is the mother of 11, grandmother of 21, and great grandmother of 3. She regularly offers help to abortion bound women in Bellevue. The name of her attacker has not been released.

Tory Newman, the president of Operation Rescue, which informed LifeNews.com of the incident, says he’s also worried that the young woman may be forced into having an abortion against her wishes.

"We are concerned that this was a coerced abortion. If the woman who attacked Mary would so easily resort to violence against a frail woman in full view of numerous witnesses, we can only wonder what she has done to her daughter in private," he said.

He also urged the local police to step up their efforts to investigate and prosecute the incident.

"The Bellevue Police Department needs a wake-up call to the reality of what is happening in their community," he said.
