Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has a message for John McCain about the kind of person he should select as his running mate. The former Arkansas governor says McCain should only pick a pro-life advocate as his vice president and that it shouldn’t be Mitt Romney.

Huckabee said on Thursday that McCain would make it difficult on Republican and pro-life voters if he picks someone like former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge, who is pro-abortion.

“I wish he were pro-life,” Huckabee told Fox News about Ridge.

If McCain’s running mate is “not hardcore pro-life,” Huckabee asks that McCain’s pick “not do anything that would be disruptive to what has been very important to the Republican platform.”

In an interview with CBS News, Huckabee said that the opposition to a running mate who isn’t pro-life extends to Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who switched from a pro-abortion to a pro-life position before entering the Republican presidential race.

Romney has since said he wants Roe v. Wade overturned and has put forward a consistent pro-life message on abortion, but many pro-life advocates distrust him still.

“I think a lot of people, not just social conservatives, but a lot of the Republicans I know are not necessarily comfortable with Romney," Huckabee said. “But it has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with inconsistencies in positions he’s held, and that’s it.”

"The issue is that, in many ways, Mitt Romney has had very definite swings of position, not just on one or two things, but on many of the issues," Huckabee added. "I think that there are better choices for Sen. McCain that will have the approval of values voters."

Huckabee told Fox he doesn’t think McCain will call his name as a running mate.

“I have no expectations that I’m going to get that phone call,” he said. “My commitment is to support him. And I don’t request that he support me in order to get my support."
