Canberra, Australia (LifeNews.com) — In a determination that could prompt some women to have abortions or feel worse about having a child, an Australian agency has released a new report claiming newborn babies are a strain on the nation’s economy. The Productivity Commission complained about the island nation’s fertility rate.

The report indicates the Australian fertility rate is at its highest levels in 25 years and the agency warned that further increases would aggravate issues associated with the nation’s aging population.

That analysis comes despite other studies showing nations across the globe from Italy to Russia to Japan are experiencing underpopulation issues and worker shortages that make it harder to care for the elderly.

The report slammed parents having more than three children by saying they there is a "presence of short-sightedness by parents about the lifetime costs of raising children."

But Wendy Wright, the president of Concerned Women for America, told LifeNews.com in an interview that the attitude expressed in the report "reflects a Marxist and socialist viewpoint that people are merely objects to be manipulated for the benefit of the state."

Wright says the Australian agency "neglects to understand the dynamic benefits of families to society."

"It adopts a shortsighted view that women who put their family first are somehow a drain on the economy – ignoring the fact that many women bring in an income even as they stay at home with their children," she explained.

Wright said the influence the report and the media attention surrounding it will have on women’s decisions to have a baby or have an abortion can’t be understated.

"The unintended consequence of socialist policies is that they cause disincentives for having children," she said.

Wright also worries it will encourage companies to not hire, or fire, working women who are pregnant or may become so.
