Salem, OR (LifeNews.com) — Oregon House Majority Leader Dave Hunt recently said that, under his leadership during the 2009 session of the state House, he plans to push forward a measure forcing state taxpayers to fund embryonic stem cell research. But Oregon Right to Life says state residents should not be forced to pay for it.

Hunt says the House of Representatives will aggressively revisit their support of taxpayer funding for embryonic stem cell research.

The comments come after pro-life advocates successfully defeated HB 2801 in the 2007 session. It would have established a committee to oversee and issue taxpayer-financed grants for the controversial science.

But because embryonic stem cell research involves the destruction of human life and has never been successful in helping patients, ORTL executive director Gayle Atteberry tells LifeNews.com it should be rejected.

“It’s a shame that in the midst of a struggling economy, and when families have to tighten their budgets, the House Democrats want to fund research that’s only proven results are false promises," she said.

“Embryonic stem cell research is laden with scientific, ethical and moral concerns and in over 20 years has failed to produce a single human medical trial," she explained. "However, adult stem cell research, which is being ignored by Hunt and others, has a history of not just clinical trials but proven treatments.”

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health there are currently 2102 U.S. clinical trials on adult stem cell treatments. There’s not a single embryonic stem cell treatment undergoing clinic trial.

“Many politicians have said they support embryonic stem cell research because they want to ‘help people’. If they really want to help people they will stop wasting people’s tax dollars on failed research," Atteberry told LifeNews.com.

"If they really want to help people they will start supporting the research that’s currently curing people. That research is adult stem cell research," she concluded.

ACTION: Contact your state legislators and urge opposition to embryonic stem cell research and making taxpayers fund it. Urge support for adult stem cell research instead. Find contact information at https://www.leg.state.or.us.
