Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Several names have been bandied about in political circles as potential vice-presidential running mates for pro-abortion presidential candidate Barack Obama. However, a leading pro-life Catholic group says all of the people mentioned thus far are strong abortion activists.

Brian Burch, the president of the national Catholic based advocacy group Fidelis, tells LifeNews.com that a pro-abortion running mate will solidify the decision by most Catholic voters to oppose Obama.

“The choice of a pro-abortion Catholic for vice president would deal a major blow to any efforts by the Obama campaign to reach out to Catholic voters," he said.

“Both the bishops and the laity continue to wrestle with the scandal of prominent Catholic politicians who support abortion, and the choice of a pro-abortion Catholic running mate would amount to scratching at a deep and festering wound in the American Catholic Church," he said.

LifeNews.com profiled Virginia governor Tim Kaine, the latest potential pro-abortion running mate.

Kaine has been discussed as a good fit for Obama given his Catholic faith and supposed pro-life views, but Burch says otherwise.

“Tim Kaine deserves some credit for supporting a ban on partial birth abortion, but he has also made clear that he is totally committed to protecting the right to kill unborn children," Burch told LifeNews.com.

“Opposing the barbaric practice of infanticide is better than Barack Obama, but it hardly qualifies one as pro-life,” said Burch. “Sadly Kaine represents yet another politician who professes to be ‘personally opposed’ yet refuses to back any meaningful efforts to stop abortion in America.”

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has also received attention as a possible running mate because of Obama’s Kansas connection and has need to appeal to women upset by Hillary Clinton’s loss.

However, Sebelius has drawn the scorn of Kansans across the political spectrum because of her close relationship with late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller and her numerous vetoes of bills that would place common sense limits on abortions in state law.

Burch said Sebelius’ pro-abortion position is so extreme that her own Bishop recently asked that she refrain from receiving communion.

Senators Joe Biden and Chris Dodd have both been mentioned as possible vice presidential picks, but both have racked up decades worth of shoddy pro-life voting records.

That there is no prominent pro-life Democrat mentioned as possible running mate for Obama is no surprise for Burch.

“Given his position on abortion, everyone expects Senator Obama to select a pro-abortion vice presidential candidate," he said.

"But the choice of a Catholic who publicly rejects the teachings of their faith on this ‘foundational’ issue could be disastrous,” said Burch. “Just ask John Kerry or Rudy Giuliani.”
