Columbus, OH (LifeNews.com) — Ohio Right to Life is the next state pro-life group to stand behind John McCain for president over his pro-abortion rival Barack Obama. The group says McCain is strongly pro-life on abortion and the only pro-life candidate with a realistic chance of sitting in the White House.

“McCain is the only dedicated and electable pro-life candidate for President this year," ORTL executive director Mike Gonidakis told LifeNews.com Tuesday.

"He has defended the unborn from abortion for three decades in Congress," Gonidakis added.

The state pro-life leader said Obama’s pro-abortion position is a night and day difference because Obama supports unlimited abortions paid for at taxpayers’ expense.

"The glaring difference between Senator McCain’s strong pro-life record versus Senator Obama’s support for abortion on demand should serve as a wakeup call to everyone who believes in our mission,” he said.

Gonidakis said McCain pointed out his own pro-life stances on overturning Roe v. Wade and supporting various pro-life legislation when he spoke to attendees at the recent National Right to Life convention.

“I am pro-life because I know what it is like to live without human rights, where human life is accorded no inherent value," McCain said in a special video statement. "And I know that I have a personal obligation to advocate human rights wherever they are denied…even in our own country, when we fail to respect the inherent dignity of all human life, born or unborn.”

Gonidakis said McCain, unlike Obama, has supported a ban on partial-birth abortions and supported efforts to allow parents to know when their teen daughters are considering an abortion.

For Ohio pro-life advocates, having McCain in the White House is important because he presents a much better opportunity for pro-life judges who will reverse Roe.

"The next President of the United States may have the ability to change the composition of the U.S. Supreme Court," Gonidakis explained.

"Who do you want making that decision, an extremely liberal, inexperienced junior senator from Illinois who supports abortion on demand or an experienced statesman with a solid record of opposing abortion?" he asked.

"We urge all of our members to support John McCain for President,” he concluded.
