Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Congressman Chris Smith of New Jersey is no stranger to the pro-life community and he told attendees at the National Right to Life convention that the pro-life movement needs John McCain as president. Smith has championed the pro-life cause for decades and said pro-life voters can trust McCain to stand with them on abortion.

“John McCain is proudly pro-life and will faithfully and effectively promote the culture of life both here and abroad,” Smith said. “I have known John McCain for three decades and trust him as you do.”

“John McCain had the support of Arizona Right to Life,” in his Congressional campaigns, Smith said, and, from the beginning of his career in Washington, “he talked about this as our issue and truly defending the right to life.”

“Now, more than ever, the pro-life movement needs men and women of courage,” Smith added. “McCain won’t waffle, capitulate or retreat.”

Smith said pro-life voters should have an easy time in November choosing between McCain and pro-abortion Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

He talked about how Obama opposed the Born Alive Infants Protection Act in the state legislature and essentially put himself on record as saying babies born alive after a failed abortion shouldn’t receive legitimate medical care.

Smith said Obama’s first priority as president would be to sign the so-called Freedom of Choice Act — legislation so heinous that it would overturn all pro-life laws nationwide.

“He would compel each and every one of us to fund abortion in the United States through various programs,” Smith said.

As a result of the clear contrast between McCain and Obama, and he said the pro-life movement must stand with John McCain to move the cause forward.

“The challenge to the sanctity of human life at home as well as abroad is enormous — I don’t think it has ever been worse and I’ve been involved in this movement for 36 years,” Smith said. “This is the most important election and we need to be united.”

“We also need a president who will promote a culture of life and a respect for fundamental human rights and especially for the disenfranchised unborn child and those wounded women who have had abortions,” Smith concluded.
