Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — TA new poll released on Tuesday by CNN finds pro-abortion presidential candidate Barack Obama leading John McCain by five percent, thought it falls within the margin of error. With the November presidential elections just 18 weeks away, Obama leads McCain by a 50 to 45 percent margin, confirming other national polls showing the Democrat with a slight edge.

A similar CNN poll last month found Obama leading 46 to 43 percent and CNN polling director Keating Holland says the survey shows Obama’s small lead solidifying.

"Every standard telephone poll taken in June has shown Obama ahead of McCain, with nearly all of them showing Obama’s margin somewhere between 3 and 6 points," Holland said.

"In most of them, that margin is not enough to give him a lead in a statistical sense, but it appears that June has been a good month for Obama,” he added.

The new CNN poll also finds Obama’s lead over McCain drops when the top third party candidates are included.

With independent candidate Ralph Nader and Libertarian candidate Bob Barr included in the mix, Obama’s lead drops to 46 to 43 percent with Nader getting six percent in the poll and Barr coming in at three percent.

However, Holland says both third party candidates should expect to receive a smaller share of the vote when Americans go to the polls in November.

"A useful rule of thumb is that third-party candidates in November get no more than half the support polls show them having in June or July," Holland said.

The poll also found 25 percent of voters say Obama is unpatriotic, pointing to a theme that has cropped up among Obama opponents and voters who have doubts about him becoming president.

The CNN survey found 10 percent of Democrats, 29 percent of independents and 40 percent of Republicans believe Obama is unpatriotic.

CNN conducted the poll from June 26-29 and surveyed 906 registered voters and has a 3.5 percent margin of error.

The most recent electoral college projection by LifeNews.com found Obama with a very narrow lead over McCain and one that could easily switch should McCain switch Ohio to his column.

According to the projections, if the election were held today Obama would become the next president with a 285-253 electoral college victory.
