Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Leading Catholic columnist Deal Hudson has written a new national editorial saying pro-life Catholics should reject Barack Obama because of his pro-abortion positions. Hudson says Obama is so out of line with Catholic teaching on abortion that he can’t be supported for president.

"There’s no way to nuance this: Barack Obama’s record puts him on the extreme wing of the abortion movement," Hudson says.

Though some critics have labeled Obama the "infanticide candidate" because of his repeated opposition to a bill to protect infants born after botched abortions, Hudson says Obama is still gaining traction with Catholic voters.

"Barack Obama’s stances on life … are simply antithetical to Catholic social teaching," Hudson adds.

Hudson lamented that some Catholics like Pepperdine professor Doug Kmiec are confusing Catholic voters by saying Obama is good enough on abortion simply because he opposes abortions despite not supporting policies to reduce or stop them.

He said Kmiec and other Catholic Obama backers will try to gloss over Obama’s pro-abortion views by saying McCain is too wrong on other political issues the Catholic Church doesn’t consider as important as protecting unborn children.

"Their strategy is obvious: Obama’s Catholics will do everything they can to avoid the infanticide question," Hudson writes, "and will try to foster a moral equivalence between their positions on prudential matters and the non-negotiable life issues."

"The debate among Catholics, then, is whether this list of prudential policy issues trumps the obligation taught by the Church toward protecting unborn life," Hudson says.

For him and for Catholic Church leaders, Hudson says the answer is no.

He cited Boston archbishop Sean O’Malley who said in an interview last November that Catholic support for Democrats who are pro-abortion candidates "borders on scandal as far I am concerned."

"Catholic voters should be reminded of what Denver Archbishop Chaput said to Obama’s Catholic supporters," Hudson added.

Chaput said he could think of no "proportionate reason" to support pro-abortion candidates.

"It’s the kind of reason we will be able to explain, with a clean heart, to the victims of abortion when we meet them face to face in the next life — which we most certainly will," Chaput explained.

Hudson said Chaput also exposed Obama for proposing nothing that would actually decrease the number of abortions.

"Archbishop Chaput also pointed out that the emperor had no clothes when it came to Obama’s candidacy benefiting a culture of life," he said.

Ultimately, for Hudson, Obama’s overture to Planned Parenthood, saying he would sign the Freedom of Choice Act during his first week in office, is the last straw.

The bill would not only make legalized abortion a national law but it would overturn every pro-life limit put in place by state legislatures in ever state in the country.

As a result, Hudson says it’s "difficult for Catholic supporters of Obama to keep a straight face when talking about a culture of life."
