Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) — California pro-life advocates participated in a rally today at the state capitol to protest state taxpayer funding of abortions. The state spends more than $33 million to pay for the abortions of poor women even though main abortion business Planned Parenthood brought in $1 billion in revenue last year.

The Coalition for Women and Children was one of several groups to help organize the event and it said California shouldn’t be funding abortions in the middle of a budget crisis.

"This year, our state budget is in crisis. Services such as education are undergoing deep cuts," the group said. "In the meantime, the most recent figures for Medi-Cal money spent on abortions show that California paid over $32 Million in 2005."

"The women and children of our state need services, not abortions," the group continued. "Abortions hurt the women who have them and deprive us of the children who are our legacy."

Twenty-five other groups participated in the rally, including the California Prolife Council, California Right to Life, the Capitol Research Institute, Catholics for the Common Good, Concerned Women for America, Democrats for Life of California, Latinos 4Life, Lutherans for Life and many others.

The activities began with lobbying training and an orientation inside the Capitol and the rally around lunchtime.

Participants heard from Walter Hoye, a Bay Area pastor who talked about the negative impact abortion has had on the African-American community.

Sympathetic legislators followed with their pledges to do what they could to halt the funding and two post-abortive women shared how their abortions destroyed their lives.

The pro-life advocates concluded the rally by heading to visit with state legislators and urging them to cut or end the abortion funding.

Every year, pro-life advocates have tried to amend the state budget to remove the funding for as many as 95,000 abortions annually. That’s about 8 percent of the total number of abortions done nationwide — and all paid for at the expense of California taxpayers.

"Enough is enough," Wynette Sills of the Coalition to Eliminate Abortion Funding, told LifeNews.com before the rally.

"We will no longer be unwilling accomplices to this tragedy through our tax dollars, especially during this time of budget deficit conditions, when our teachers are being laid-off, libraries and parks are closing, senior citizens must go without their prescriptions, heathcare to needy families is being cut, and our public safety is at risk," she explained.

"Surely, our limited tax dollars can be better utilized to truly help the needy of our great state, rather than further subsidize the abortion industry," Sills added.
