Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — A pro-life organization that monitors corporations that provide contributions to Planned Parenthood says Bank of America and Wachovia need to come clean about donations the companies have made to the nation’s largest abortion business. Both corporations appear on Life Decisions International’s boycott list.
LDI president Douglas Scott tells LifeNews.com that "Bank of America continues to play word games in an attempt to mislead consumers" and "Wachovia is not any better."
The pro-life says Bank of America Foundation President Andrew Plepler defended the donations to Planned Parenthood saying they are "primarily" driven by its employees through a matching gifts program.
Scott says the wording leaves the door open to the question of whether Bank of America is also funding Planned Parenthood outside of its program to support its employees’ charitable gifts.
He says LDI has been trying since 2003 to get company officials to answer the question without success.
In a November letter to Plepler, he asks: "Once again, we will ask the same questions that Bank of America has refused to answer over the past several years. Is the Matching Gift Program the only way in which Planned Parenthood receives support from Bank of America or any related entity?"
Scott also wants to know whether local banks are allowed, on their own, to make donations to Planned Parenthood as well.
"Several months have now passed and our November 2007 request has also been ignored," Scott told LifeNews.com. "Now why does Bank of America refuse to answer our simple question?"
Meanwhile, Scott says Wachovia has told customers it has not made donations to Planned Parenthood for many years.
Yet, Scott points to an article in the Weekly Standard magazine last year saying otherwise.
"If what Wachovia has been telling customers were true, why won’t someone at the corporation tell LDI the same story?" Scott asked.
However, he said no Wachovia officials will go on record about the company’s support for the abortion business.
"We urge executives at Bank of America and Wachovia to come clean on this issue," Scott said.
The two banking institutions are not alone in their industry in supporting Planned Parenthood. Wells Fargo, Chase and Northern Trust are some of the other financial institutions that are boycott targets due to their backing the abortion business.
