Atlanta, GA (LifeNews.com) — Mike Huckabee has picked up the support of the leading pro-life organization in Georgia as the political action committee of Georgia Right to Life tells LifeNew.com it’s backing the former Arkansas governor. The group cites Huckabee’s support for a human life amendment as the key reason for the endorsement.

Georgia Right to Life said its PAC’s mission it to "endorse and support candidates for public office who have a proven commitment to the sanctity of human life and will be a strong and effective voice for the unborn."

The group noted that the Republican presidential race includes other candidates with very strong pro-life positions but it found that Huckabee was the best of the top-tier candidates with the best chance of winning the nomination.

The Georgia group said it evaluated three factors — the positions of the candidates on the life issues, their records on the life issues and their ability to win.

Bryan Lash, the director of the PAC, told LifeNews.com, "We believe that Gov. Huckabee is the strongest and most effective pro-life candidate in this race."

Lash added that "Huckabee’s recent surge in the polls, we believe, demonstrates that he is the pro-life movement’s best hope in defeating pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani."

Lash noted that Huckabee supported Arkansas Amendment 68 in his state, a measure that will take effect the moment that Roe vs. Wade is reversed and prohibit abortions there.

Lash said his group is eager to approve a similar measure in Georgia that would protect human life and recognize personhood for unborn children.

“Passing a Personhood Amendment here in Georgia is our key issue in achieving our objective to extend the protections of the law to all ‘persons’ both born and unborn," he said. "Support of a candidate who ushered a similar amendment through his own state speaks volumes to us."

The group indicated to LifeNews.com that Huckabee told it that he supports only the life of the mother exception with regard to legal abortions.

National Right to Life, the parent organization of the Georgia group, has endorsed Fred Thompson as have several of its other state affiliates.
