Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — One of the largest Christian web sites on the Internet has released the results of a poll it conducted among its forum members. The ChristiaNet.com poll finds virtually all Christians oppose abortions, with all but a handful saying they oppose all or almost all abortions.

Out of 2,300 Christians the web site surveyed, 59% believed that all abortions in the United States should be illegal.

Reasons included the citation of the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill" from the Bible.

Most in this group equated abortion with murder while others agreed that only God can provide the gift of life and only He has the right to terminate it.

"God is the giver of life and the taker," one respondent said.

Others in the poll cited the fact that human life scientifically begins at the point of conception.

"No matter if the baby is deformed or the reason it was conceived, once it has been conceived it is a life and nobody has the right to deny that life for any reason," one person said.

Thirty-three percent of those surveyed did not feel that abortions should be illegal in all cases. Instead, they favored banning abortions except in the very rare cases to protect the mother’s life or in situations such as rape or incest.

They brought up points such as "What if the baby was conceived out of rape or incest and what if it is deformed, shouldn’t the mother have a choice."

"I don’t believe in abortion if it is to be used as a method of birth control," another respondent added, saying the rare exceptions are the only cases when abortion might be justified.

Only eight percent of Christians were unsure about whether or not the government should prohibit abortions.

This was evident in comments such as, "I don’t want my personal opinions to influence somebody else’s situation legally," and "The choice should be between the mother and God."

To help educate Christians, ChristiaNet has just released a series of abortion articles to help them understand facts about abortion.
