Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — The February 26th issue of Time magazine features a dramatic cover story highlighting the work of the nation’s pregnancy resource centers and the effect they’ve had on helping women and reducing abortions throughout the country.

Titled, the "Abortion Campaign You Never Hear About," Time magazine focuses on the centers but also interviews abortion advocates who don’t like what they do.

The magazine calls pregnancy centers "the new face of an old movement: kind, calm, nonjudgmental."

Despite some examples of bias in the news story — it erroneously says childbirth is riskier than abortion — Care Net’s Vice President of Communications Kristin Hansen told LifeNews.com the article was a good start in acknowledging their positive work.

Hansen called the Time story a “long overdue recognition of the growth and impact of pregnancy centers."

"We’re encouraged to see the society at large take notice and ask tough questions," she said.

There are more than 2,300 pregnancy centers across the United States — significantly more than the number of abortion businesses. Unlike abortion facilities, these centers help pregnant women with baby and maternity resources, parenting classes, adoption, medical and educational needs, counseling, community referrals and support for women who had abortions they regret.

Hansen said the article and the coverage it gives pregnancy centers encourages them to provide more and better services and to increase the level of professionalism and medical expertise they offer.

“Pregnancy centers are committed to serving women with compassion and integrity,” Hansen said.

“With more than one million women every year believing abortion is their only answer, there is much work to do," she added. "A woman facing such a critical decision deserves to know about all her options from a variety of sources, not just those that may profit from her decision.”

Care Net supports a network of more than 1,000 pregnancy centers in North America.

Together with the pregnancy center network Heartbeat International, it operates the 24-7 call center, OptionLine (800-395-HELP) that connects callers with help at local pregnancy centers.
