Chicago, IL (LifeNews.com) — A Catholic priest in Chicago is under fire for supporting pro-abortion Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, who has filed papers for an exploratory committee for president. The priest has drawn criticism for comments on a radio program praising Obama despite the senator’s record supporting unlimited abortions paid for with taxpayer dollars.
Chicago’s liberal activist priest, Father Michael Pfleger, the pastor of St. Sabina, an "African-American Catholic Church," is essentially saying people should not criticize Obama.
In comments to WBBM 770, Pfleger said "I think Barack Obama is in a class of his own. I think he is the best thing that has come across the political scene since Bobby Kennedy."
Pfleger said Obama "brings hope" to the political scene and also compared him to Martin Luther King Jr.
The priest said that such hopes makes Obama "vulnerable" to political attack.
"They become vulnerable because they tell the country and the world that we can be better and we don’t have to accept what is," he said. "And unfortunately, we live in a world where not everybody wants it to be different."
Pfleger then warned, "Do not touch this man, for if you do, you will answer to us all."
Catholic columnist Matt Abbott said he’s "not surprised" by Pfleger’s comments "given Pfleger’s past support of other pro-abortion politicians."
"I guess Pfleger doesn’t want anyone to criticize Obama for anything, or else," Abbott said. "Pfleger apparently doesn’t care a wit that Obama has a 0 percent pro-life voting record."
He said the archdiocese will "pretty much try to ignore him, for better or for worse" and that Pfleger has been seeking "the media attention, which he often receives when espousing some ‘politically correct’ cause."
Senator Obama has a 0 percent pro-life voting record according to the National Right to Life Committee. He has voted to spend taxpayer dollars to fund groups that perform or promote abortions in other countries and voted twice against parental notification and consent.
He also has voted to force taxpayers to pay for embryonic stem cell research, which involves the destruction of human life.
