Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Time Magazine is coming under fire for choosing Bill and Melinda Gates, the founder of Microsoft and his wife, as their people of the year. The magazine chose them, along with U2 frontman Bono, to highlight the worldwide charitable giving done in 2005 in the aftermath of numerous disasters.

However, pro-life groups are disturbed by the pick because the Gates Foundation donates millions annually to promote abortions worldwide.

In 2001, the Gates Foundation gave $2.8 million to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business. They continued funding the abortion business annually and upped the donation to $3.5 million in 2005.

Gates also upset pro-life advocates when he donated $400,000 to the Yes on Proposition 71 campaign that persuaded California voters to spend $6 billion in taxpayer funds on embryonic stem cell research that destroys human life.

Other donation recipients include the Alan Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood’s research arm, the United Nations Population Fund, which promotes abortion worldwide and backs China’s coercive population control program, and the World Health Organization, which also backs abortion.

"While it’s great that they want to help make a difference in the lives of others, we take issue with some of the ways in which they do it," the pro-life youth group Rock for Life said about the Gates Foundation donations.

As of August 2004, the Gates Foundation had $27 million in its coffers and reports show it has a $28.8 million endowment now.

The winner of the largest private foundation is the Buffet Foundation, founded by billionaire investor William Buffet and his deceased wife Susan. They, too, have spend millions backing abortion.
