Calgary, Canada (LifeNews.com) — A Canadian man who beat up his ex-girlfriend after she told him she refused to get an abortion will spend time in jail. Pro-life groups say the violent incident shows the problems that can result from legalizing abortion.
The Alberta Court of Appeal yesterday overturned the conditional sentence given to Patrick William Coulthard saying it was necessary for him to serve jail time.
"She was pregnant with his child and refused to have an abortion," Justice Bryan Mahoney noted. "The attack caused great risk to the victim and child."
According to the Edmonton Sun newspaper, Coulthard, 26, plead guilty to assault causing bodily harm in the attack that happened November 16 of last year.
The Sun reported that Tia Grahn was on the way out of her apartment in Lethbridge, Canada one morning when Coulthard attacked her from behind.
He struck Grahn 10 times in the head with a hard plastic object and kicked her in the stomach three times. She needed six stitches after the attack. Her baby survived and was born without complications.
