Mount Pleasant, MI (LifeNews.com) — Protesters were present outside Planned Parenthood’s newest Michigan location for its opening on Tuesday. The proximity of the new facility to Central Michigan University has been a concern of pro-life advocates in the area.

Pro-life protesters gathered in front of a Walgreens Drug Store, behind which is the new referral center for Planned Parenthood. On-site abortion are not performed there, but staff members will refer women to other abortion businesses in the area.

The protesters, carrying signs that read "Pro-Life, Pro-Women, Pro Babies!!!" and "Planned Parenthood not Welcome Here," got mixed responses from drivers who passed by, from hocks of support to profane shouts of dissent.

The opening of the clinic has prompted at least one local business to relocate.

Linda Conklin, owner of the Golden Comb located next to the new Planned Parenthood office, said she plans to leave.

"I’m moving my business because I don’t want to subject my employees or my clients to whatever may happen with this," Conklin told a local newspaper.

James Conway of Central Michigan Citizens for Life told LifeNews.com that cuts in CMU’s health services have created a need for crisis pregnancy counseling, a need Planned Parenthood wants to fill.

However, Conway said that the Central Michigan Crisis Pregnancy Services, adjacent to the campus, provides pregnancy help — including some of the same services as Planned Parenthood — without referring women to abortion businesses. The pregnancy center is gearing up to offer even more services in the near future.

Conway said that his group is focusing on educating the community about Planned Parenthood’s agenda, and will hold a series of events to specifically address area church, business, and civic leaders, as well as the general public about the newest facility of Planned Parenthood Northern Michigan.

Conway added that his organization plans to protest five days a week outside the new Planned Parenthood facility, and at least one Saturday a month.

State pro-life leaders have applauded Conway’s efforts.

"The news of Planned Parenthood opening a facility has motivated many in the area. What many people don’t realize is that Planned Parenthood is America’s number one abortion provider," said Pam Sherstad of Right to Life of Michigan. "Women deserve better and Jim has been active to help Mt. Pleasant women know where real help can be found."
