Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) — With its platform and list of Hispanic convention speakers all supporting abortion, pro-life Hispanics are concerned that the Democratic Party is not representing Hispanic Americans. The criticisms come in light of a poll showing a majority of Hispanics are pro-life.

Raimundo Rojas, director of Hispanic Outreach for the National Right to Life Committee says the convention isn’t representing the views of 78% of Hispanics.

"In an April 2004 Zogby poll, 78% of Hispanics identified themselves as pro-life," Rojas said. "We are extremely disappointed that the only Latino speakers at the [convention] consistently oppose efforts to protect unborn babies."

In fact, all of the Hispanic speakers supported abortion, including members of Congress such as Robert Menendez of New Jersey, Hilda Solis and Linda Sanchez of California, and Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano.

Meanwhile, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who also backs abortion, is the convention chairman. NARAL recently selected Richardson as one of several spokespersons and fundraisers in their election year effort to raise $25 million to elect John Kerry.

But, according to the April Zogby International poll, when asked to give a specific position as to if and when abortion should be legal or illegal, Hispanics support a pro-life position by a 78-21 percent margin.

An overwhelming 40% of all Hispanics say abortion should never be legal. Others taking a pro-life view say abortion should be illegal except when the life of the mother is in danger (11%) or illegal except in rare instances when the woman is a victim of rape or incest (27%).

Only 21 percent took a position in favor of legal abortions and only 15 percent of Hispanic Americans say abortion should be legal throughout pregnancy.

"In their zeal to inaugurate themselves with the radically pro-abortion Democratic National Committee, these Latino ‘leaders’ have turned their backs on the core beliefs that underline their culture," Rojas explained.

"They may try to soft-peddle the issue, but abortion is destroying the lives of Hispanic babies, women and families in disproportionately high numbers."
