Michigan Planned Parenthood Opens New Facility, Making Abortion Referrals

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Planned Parenthood is opening a new facility in Michigan, near Central Michigan University. Local pro-life groups are already engaged in educating the public about the nation’s largest abortion provider opening in their backyard.

Planned Parenthood Northern Michigan will open its facility at the end of August, and its proximity to CMU is no accident.

"The area has a need for affordable family planning services, especially with the university here," said Adrienne Brune, community development coordinator for the Mount Pleasant project. "There has been a lack for many years."

James Conway of Central Michigan Citizens for Life told LifeNews.com that cuts in CMU’s health services have created a need.

However, Conway said that the Central Michigan Crisis Pregnancy Services, adjacent to the campus, provides some of the same services as Planned Parenthood — without referring women to abortion businesses. The pregnancy center is gearing up to offer even more services in the near future.

Conway said that his group is focusing on educating the community about Planned Parenthood’s agenda, and will hold a series of events Monday to specifically address area church, business, and civic leaders, as well as the general public about the newest facility of Planned Parenthood Northern Michigan.

Conway said that he was told the new facility will not be performing on-site abortions.

State pro-life leaders have applauded Conway’s efforts.

"The news of Planned Parenthood opening a facility has motivated many in the area. What many people don’t realize is that Planned Parenthood is America’s number one abortion provider," said Pam Sherstad of Right to Life of Michigan. "Women deserve better and Jim has been active to help Mt. Pleasant women know where real help can be found."
