San Francisco, CA (LifeNews.com) — A funeral is planned for Wednesday for Holly Patterson, a San Francisco-area teen who died after taking the dangerous RU 486 abortion pill.
Meanwhile, her father, Monty Patterson, is calling for further investigation into what went wrong and why his daughter died after taking the abortion drug she obtained from an area Planned Parenthood.
"There are several elements involved, and I want to look into all of them and understand what went wrong,” Monty Patterson said. "The system she trusted failed her."
On September 10, Holly’s boyfriend took her to Planned Parenthood. Seven weeks pregnant, she was given the abortion drug mifepristoneand also given misoprostol vaginal inserts to use two days later that would produce contractions and eventually she would expel the body of the dead baby.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office is investigating the cause of death, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed Monday that it also has launched an inquiry into the case.
The RU 486 abortion drug is used in 29 countries worldwide and was approved in 2000 for use in the United States. Approximately 200,000 people have taken the abortion drug in the U.S.
A spokeswoman for Danco Laboratories, which manufactures the drug, said Monday it provided the FDA with information about some 400 cases of the abortion drug causing complications for women taking it. Most cases involved excessive bleeding but some included bacterial infections.
Two women who have taken RU 486 have died recently. A Canadian woman went into septic shock similar to Holly and died. Another woman who took RU-486 died from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
