Fort Morgan, CO (LifeNews.com) -- Three groups of pro-life young people are now more than halfway through their nationwide trek across America to represent the pro-life perspective on abortion. Sponsored by the pro-life group Crossroads, the walkers are divided into three groups where they literally walk from the west coast to Washington, D.C.

Wearing shirts with the words "Pro-Life" in bold letters, the 18-30-year-old participants take the summer off to educate Americans and meet with pro-life people.

While other groups are taking different routes, one group is heading from San Francisco to Washington and recently stopped in Fort Morgan, on the eastern side of Colorado.

“The thing that’s shocked me the most is how pro-life America is,” Josh Spears, the leader of the group, told the local Times newspaper.

Spears said the first group of mostly college students made the cross-country journey in 1993 after being inspired by Pope John Paul II during a homily in. The first students to participate came from University in Steubenville, Ohio.

“He told them to use their useful energy to change the culture of death we're living in to a culture of life,” he said. “What better way than to walk across the country?”

Residents of Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, California and Kentucky are involved in the group that is passing through Colorado and anywhere from 8-12 people participate in each group making their way from town to town along the highways and byways of America.

The North American walks started in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Vancouver on May 23 and end August 14.

The American walks conclude in Washington at the U.S. Capitol and the Canadian walk will finish in Ottawa at the Canadian parliament building.

From the Pacific coast to the Atlantic, these simultaneous walks for life will cover over 13,000 miles, pass through 38 states, 4 provinces and thousands of towns and cities.

Last summer, Crossroads featured it's first ever pro-life walk across Ireland.
