Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A zealous pro-abortion member of Congress who led the attack on pregnancy centers that provide women with abortion alternatives is emerging as a leading candidate to replace Sen. Hillary Clinton. With Barack Obama tapping Clinton as his Secretary of State, a replacement is needed to finish her Senate term.

New York Gov. David Paterson, a pro-abortion Democrat, will decide who will take Clinton's place and the person he names would likely be a shoo-in to keep the Senate seat long-term.

If leading pro-abortion groups have their way, that will be Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

The National Organization for Women PAC and the Feminist Majority Political Action Committee announced their endorsement of Maloney in an emailed statement to LifeNews.com.

"Sen. Hillary Clinton leaves big shoes to fill, and Carolyn Maloney has what it takes. She knows how to tackle big issues and is willing to take on entrenched interests," NOW president Kim Gandy said. "She is a tireless advocate for her constituents."

"She is an effective legislator who never takes no for an answer when it comes to fighting for women of the world," FMF president Eleanor Smeal added.

However, Maloney doesn't fight for all women.

Last month, she held a press conference at which she said Congress will do the dirty work for Obama when it comes to funding the UNFPA and forced abortions.

Maloney told reporters that the Democratic-controlled Congress, run by abortion advocates, will restore the $40 million annual funding to the UNFPA with Obama's support.

“You know the president will have to do nothing,” Maloney said. “He will just have to let the will of Congress go through. One of the changes is that UNFPA will be funded.”

The Bush administration has withheld funding from the UNFPA because it has been supporting the forced abortion policy imposed on women in China who violate the nation's family planning rules allowing just one child.

Maloney also led the fight against helping women with unplanned pregnancies find abortion alternatives.

Maloney introduced the House version of a bill alleging that pregnancy centers mislead women by giving them information on abortion's risks and alternatives.

Her Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women’s Services Act" would place burdensome regulations on pregnancy centers.

It would also force the Federal Trade Commission to create and enforce rules to prohibit deceptive practices that pregnancy centers say they never use to reach women -- such as advertising under the "abortion services" section of the phone book.

In previous comments about her bill she claimed some pregnancy centers "take a more underhanded approach to lure in women seeking abortions by using tactics that should be illegal."

Maloney never cited a single case to make her point.
