Pierre,
SD (LifeNews.com) -- For a second time, the voters of South Dakota
defeated a state ballot measure that would have banned most abortions
after defeating a similar measure two years ago. The 2006 ban would
have only allowed abortions to save the life of the mother and the
2008 ban added rape and incest exceptions with the hope of persuading
more pro-life voters to support it.
Instead, South Dakota voters defeated Initiated Measure 11 by a 55-45 percentage point margin.
The margin was similar to the vote last time around despite the attempt to appear to the majority of voters who said in 2006 that they would support a ban with the additional exceptions..
The defeat of the abortion ban came even though abortion advocates got themselves in trouble by using the name of the states doctors group in its advertising.
The South Dakota State Medical Association was added to a list of groups supposedly opposing the ban and the organization sent a letter asking the South Dakota Healthy Families group to cease and desist using their name in all of their ads and print pieces.
The pro-abortion group also used the name of Avera Hospital in its materials against the ban, but the hospital told Vote Yes for Life, the group behind the measure, that it supported Measure 11.
