California Pro-Life Advocates Say Their State Out of Touch on Parental Rights and Abortion

Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- California pro-life advocates say their state is out of touch with the rest of the nation when it comes to protecting the right of parents to know when their minor daughter is considering an abortion. Voters in the Golden State will have an opportunity to change that this November when they vote on Proposition 4.

The Yes on 4 Campaign told LifeNews.com on Tuesday that it wants state voters to know that California is in the minority when it comes to protecting teenagers and parental rights.

Thirty-four states have parental involvement laws in effect -- meaning about 60 percent of Americans live in state with such a law in place while California doesn’t allow parents to help their children consider the life-changing decision of an abortion.

If liberal states like Minnesota and Massachusetts have parental involvement laws in place, surely California can join them, the group said.

Campaign spokeswoman Katie Short says parental involvement is non-partisan and should earn the support of Democrats and Republicans, and people of all races and socioeconomic status.

She also says Proposition 4 is less stringent than the law on the books in other states.

Unlike twenty of these laws, Prop 4 requires only notification, not consent from a parent before a minor makes the significant decision to have an abortion. Also, Proposition 4 allows for notification of a different adult family member in circumstances where a girl fears abuse from a parent.

"The Yes on 4 campaign thinks it's about time that California join the majority of states in enacting laws that involve a family member in a minor's decision to have an abortion. As most of the country has recognized, this is common sense," Short told LifeNews.com.

The Yes on 4 Campaign is a coalition of doctors, nurses, and educators working to pass Proposition 4, which is also called Sarah’s Law because they care about the emotional health of vulnerable young girls who, they say, shouldn’t have to make such an adult decision alone.
