Pro-Life Group Says Negligence in Abortion Death Case a Nationwide Problem

Hyannis, MA (LifeNews.com) -- A leading pro-life group is reacting to the not guilty plea abortion practitioner Rapin Osathanondh entered yesterday. Osathanondh says his medical negligence was not responsible for the abortion death of Laura Smith, a 22-year-old who died after he botched abortion procedure.

Osathanondh did the abortion in September that killed Smith and he was arraigned Thursday in Barnstable Superior Court.

Osathanondh was indicted by a grand jury after an investigation by local police, state police and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.

The investigation uncovered a lack of life-saving equipment, a failure to monitor the patient, the delay in calling 911, and an effort to cover up his negligence.

Troy Newman of Operation Rescue credited pro-life advocates for exposing Osathanondh and Laura's mother for her vigilance.

"This was only possible because the death was publicly exposed by pro-lifers and because Laura's mother, Eileen, was steadfastly determined to seek justice," he told LifeNews.com, which first reported the death. "It just goes to show what can happen when those fighting for justice just won't give up."

"Thank God that Osathanondh is being brought to justice and will never hurt another woman or take the life of another innocent baby," he said.

Newman said the medical negligence in the Smith case is not unique to the abortion industry. He indicated woman across the country are threatened by abortion practitioners who are less then skillful.

"The deficiencies and negligence that led to Laura's death are not unique to this particular abortionist," he said.

"These kinds of conditions exist at abortion mills across the nation. Laura's death serves as a warning to all women. When women walk into America's abortion mill, they are playing Russian Roulette with their lives," he explained.
