Chattanooga, TN (LifeNews.com) -- Abortions may return to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the first time in 15 years, according to a leading pro-life state legislator. Sen. David Fowler says he doesn't know much about the details but understands that Stuart Schneider has proposed opening an abortion center in town.

Schneider operates abortion facilities in Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina and Augusta, Georgia.

Fowler also points to a web site that talks about places in Tennessee to get abortions announcing that a new Chattanooga abortion center will open in August.

The web site, which appeared to be owned and run by Schneider and touts his other abortion centers, says, "In August of 2008, we will be opening a new, state of the art facility in Chattanooga."

Brian Harris, the president of Tennessee Right to Life, confirmed to LifeNews.com that he thinks a new abortion center is in the works as well.

He said when he received his newest copy of the phone book that covers the area, he saw a large advertisement for a new abortion business. Calls to local pro-life advocates confirmed his suspicion that the new abortion business in Chattanooga will open in August.

Harris said the ads also appear to target women in Nashville and Knoxville as well.

He told LifeNews.com he worries that the state's position as one of the most pro-abortion in the country is allowing the opening of more centers.

Because of a state Supreme Court decision, his group has not been able to act the kinds of sensible abortion limits seen in most other states.

“The announced opening proves again our state’s growing reputation among abortionists as a place where the practice is largely unregulated and now protected as a so-called ‘fundamental right’ by our state Supreme Court,” Harris said.

“Because of our state Supreme Court and legislators unwilling to act to allow a public vote, it’s open season on Tennessee’s unborn babies and abortion-vulnerable women," he added.

He urged state lawmakers to vote on SJR 27 to mitigate the decision and allow the state to pass those pro-life laws.

“The only bright side is that Chattanooga’s pro-life movement is among the nation’s most capable in terms of working together in a focused and effective manner,” Harris concluded.

“There’s no community more likely to limit the reach of the abortion facility and to ultimately close it down if it does, in fact, open," he said.
