Greensburg,
PA (LifeNews.com) -- A Pennsylvania man has been arrested after
he attacked his pregnant girlfriend and repeatedly stabbed her with
scissors. John Wilson, 34, reportedly told his live-in girlfriend
Autumn Dittmar that he wanted to cause her to have an abortion.
Wilson was arraigned in Westmoreland County Night Court on charges of aggravated and simple assault after the Thursday incident.
Hempfield District Judge Mark Mansour jailed Wilson in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
The Tribune Review newspaper cited a report from police officer John Swank as giving more details about the attack.
"Dittmar ... admitted that her live-in boyfriend, John Wilson, had stabbed her in the left arm with the scissors and punched her in the left eye, causing a bruise," Swank said. "He also punched her in the stomach and told her that he was going to 'give her an abortion.'"
The paper indicated police said Wilson also accused Dittmar of cheating on him and interviewed her after she went to Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg following the assault.
They indicated Dittmar was reluctant to talk about the attack and tried to prevent police form arresting Wilson.
Maria Vitale, the education director for the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, told LifeNews.com that the state's unborn victims law could come into play and Wilson could also be charged with killing or injuring the baby.
It is important to remember that, in any assault on a pregnant woman, there are two victimsthe mother and the child," Vitale said. "Our state legislature has recognized this, and the result is a fetal homicide law designed to bring to justice those who prey upon mothers and their unborn children.
Vitale said the attack isn't surprising given the recent trend of assaults on pregnant women by men who are upset their partners refuse to have an abortion.
Tragically,
pregnant women in Pennsylvania, like women in the rest of the nation,
are all too frequently targets of violence, she said.
