Juneau, AK (LifeNews.com) -- Abortions are returning to the Alaska capital city for the first time in 15 years as Planned Parenthood of Alaska is set to open a new abortion business this summer. The facility will offer some legitimate medical services but also do abortions in the first trimester of pregnancy.

It will be located near the campus of Bartlett Regional Hospital.

LaRae Jones, secretary of the Juneau Pro-Choice Coalition, told the Juneau Empire that abortions have not been available in Juneau for over a decade.

As a result, women in the southeastern portion of the state -- as many as 200 each year -- fly to Seattle to get abortions. The new abortion center will likely increase the number of abortions in the state and could slightly lower the total in Washington.

"It is very expensive and prohibitive in many cases for people to do that," Jones said.

She told the newspaper she has helped Planned Parenthood officials put together $150,000 of the $1.2 million needed to build the new abortion center.

Meanwhile, John Monagle, a member of the board of Alaskans for Life, told the Empire newspaper he's distressed that a new abortion business will be built and hopes local pro-life advocates will oppose it.

"I hope by the end of the summer we can bring it up fresher and that (the community) will give it a second thought," Monagle said.

In 2005, there were about 1,900 abortions in Alaska with the Alan Guttmacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, reporting that approximately 13 percent of all pregnancies ended in abortion.
