Kansas' Infamous Third-Term Abortionist Offers Free Abortions Again

Wichita, KS (LifeNews.com) -- As pro-life groups gather in Washington D.C. to march in memory of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, the infamous third term abortion practitioner George Tiller will commemorate the date by offering free abortions Saturday, as he has done for the past two years.

Tiller has drawn criticism from pro-life groups particularly because he is one of the few abortion practitioners in the U.S. that does later-term abortions. Tiller has says he does the free abortions at his facility, Women's Health Care Services, "to draw attention to the increasing pressure being placed on abortion rights," according to the Associated Press.

According to Mary Kay Culp, Executive Director of Kansans for Life, Tiller and his associates performed 18 free abortions for women on Medicaid on January 19, 2002. Approximately 65 pro-abortion advocates were present at a gathering at the abortion business that day, as well as "twice that number of pro-life citizens peacefully protesting at the perimeter."

The 2002 event featured Leroy Carhart of Nebraska as a speaker, infamous in his own right for testifying under oath that he has twisted the limbs of still-living infants during abortion procedures. Carhart also was the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit that produced a Supreme Court decision invalidating Nebraska's ban on partial-birth abortions. There was also a short "March to Save Women's Lives," which Culp called "ironic."

"For the three years since Kansas has required doctors to record how many of the 600 annual late-term abortions are done to prevent the death of the mother, none have been," said Culp.

Culp said that many Kansans consider the free abortion publicity stunt ill-advised. She said that prior to the 2002 event, Christian radio broadcasters in Kansas and surrounding states discussed the stunt, as well as Carhart's gruesome testimony.

"Polls have always shown public disdain for the use of tax dollars for elective abortions, and for the very legality of late-term and partial birth abortions," Culp added.

"My neighbor who knows I do pro-life work went out of her way to tell me how disgusted she was by [the free abortions]," said Pam Manning, president of Missouri Right to Life.

Last month, Choices Medical Clinic, a pro-life crisis pregnancy center next door to Tiller's inter-city facility, received a bomb threat from a woman who claimed the staff had "sucked the life" out of her daughter. It is very possible the threat was misdirected, and intended for Tiller's abortion business, located in the adjacent building.
