San Francisco Catholic Archbishop to Honor Pro-Abortion Activist at Event

San Francisco, CA (LifeNews.com) -- San Francisco Catholic Archbishop George Niederauer is under fire from California Catholics and pro-life advocates for plans to honor a pro-abortion real-estate mogul. Niederauer is expected to present several awards at an upcoming event, including one to George Marcus.

Marcus is a Planned Parenthood donor who opposes parental notification on abortion and has endorsed life-destroying embryonic stem cell research.

The California Catholic Daily says Marcus will receive one of the Loaves and Fishes" awards or "outstanding philanthropic works" that "epitomize the spirit of the faith traditions of charity and generosity."

However, Marcus helped finance the Planned Parenthood-led effort to oppose Proposition 73, the statewide ballot measure that would have helped parents know when their teenage daughters are considering an abortion.

Marcus also backed the state referendum that resulted in the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine that will use billions in taxpayer funds to pay for embryonic stem cell research and human cloning.

According to the Catholic paper, Marcus has also given $2,500 to Planned Parenthood Advocates Mar Monte, the political action arm of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte.

The newspaper indicates it sent information about Marcus' pro-abortion involvement to the San Francisco chancery office and asked Archbishop Niederauer to select another honoree.

Niederauer's office has not yet responded to a LifeNews.com request for comment.
