Abortion Business in Illegal Dumping Case Must Retrain Employees, Have Inspection

Lathrup Heights, MI (LifeNews.com) -- A Detroit-area abortion business caught dumping medical waste, patient records and the bodies of babies who died from abortions must retrain its employees on proper disposal techniques. That's the request to the Womancare chain of abortion centers from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

MEQ sent WomanCare owner Albert Hodari a letter today outlining the actions he must take to get in compliance with state law.

State and local officials began examining Womancare's dumpster's contents earlier this month after a local pro-life group tipped off authorities.

The search originally began at the Womancare abortion businesses in Lathrup Village but concerns eventually came up concerning its Sterling Heights facility.

After its initial investigation, MEQ outlined the violations in the letter that mostly concerned the improper disposal of medical waste. The letter mandated that Hodari retrain his employees at each of the abortion centers by April 18.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the letter informed Hodari that MEQ officials will be back for a follow-up inspection on April 3 and that he must provide documentation of employee re-training by April 18.

Hodari told the Free Press he's already retrained his employees and complied with the letter's demands.

"The retraining was done already," he claimed.

Hodari previously told the newspaper he's now put biohazard bags in every room at his abortion centers for the proper disposal of medical waste. He also said he's purchased shredders to use with older patient records that need to be destroyed.

He also claimed he has put in place new rules for employees about the proper destruction of records and disposal of medical waste.

Yet, he admitted last week he found an employee on Tuesday who placed a blood-soaked sponge in a regular trash can.

MEQ did not announce any fines against Hodari or Womancare, but local officials could fine him as much as $2,500 per incident for the potentially illegal dumping at his abortion centers.

Sgt. Vincent Lynch said last week he would likely turn the case over to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office this week because as many as 50 patients could be identified in the records. He also said the records were not old, but were of women who had abortions last month and Hodari could be charged with misdemeanors in the case.

Previously, Hodari blamed his employees for the problems -- telling the Detroit News he had a new staff member.

"They had a new employee on Saturday," Hodari said in attempting to explain away the contents.

But Monica Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, the group whose members found the potentially illegal dumping, told the News Hodari is lying.

"Then that staff member must work at every single one of his clinics" because of problems found at other facilities, she said.

"It's absolutely despicable," Miller added. "No human being belongs in the trash. What does this say about our culture: that life is trash?"

Miller also found used syringes, ultrasound pictures, used drug vials, used IV bags, bloody medical supplies, and other medical waste when her group examined the dumpsters.

Albert Hodari is the abortion practitioner who had previously killed two women in botched legal abortions and was caught on videotape bragging about lying to patients and families and not washing his hands between surgical abortions.
