Washington,
DC (LifeNews.com) -- A Mississippi House panel has killed two
pro-life bills the State Senate previously approved that would have
placed more limits on the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug and protected
Mississippi teenagers. Pro-life advocates say Democratic leaders are
to blame for the death of the bills.
State Senator Alan Nunnlee is the main sponsor of the legislation.
The first bill, the Child Protection Act, would require abortion practitioners to report sexual abuse against minor girls to state officials when the girls go to the abortion center. The second would have prohibited distribution of the abortion drug by anyone who is not a licensed physician.
However, as Pro-Life Mississippi director Tonya Britton tells OneNewsNow, Democrats on the panel prevented the bill from moving ahead. Had the House approved them, Gov. Haley Barbour would likely have signed the bills.
"The Democratic Party in this state, and in this country, has systematically refused to honor the wishes of the majority of the people," she said. "They also don't seem to understand that the targeted discrimination against the unborn is actually robbing them of votes."
Britton said black Democrats on the panel were the main ones objecting to the bill even though abortion disproportionately affects African-Americans.
